Jaguar X-type: gentlemanly demeanor. Slightly fake, but very diligent: the experience of owning a Jaguar X-Type Jaguar X Type

General information about the model

X− Type is a luxury class D car from the British company Jaguar, built on the Ford Mondeo platform. Produced in sedan and station wagon bodies. The first four-wheel drive vehicle in the history of the company. A little later, a front-wheel drive modification appeared, which greatly shocked true fans of classic rear-wheel drive Jaguars. The car was produced at a plant in the English county of Merseyside, where the Ford Escort was previously assembled. The company has spent over $ 400 million on equipment rework. New lines for assembling bodies and interior were built, painting booths and the conveyors themselves were updated. For the transportation of products abroad, a separate railway line was brought up to the plant, along which about 90% of the cars produced were transported. All plant personnel underwent additional training. On average, each specialist attended 360 hours of lectures.

In 1999, the board of directors of Ford Motor Co, in order to save the British firm from bankruptcy, instructed Jaguar Managing Director Jonathan Browning to develop and launch a new business-class sedan. The project was codenamed X400. The team of the English company had to develop a completely new car, laconically fitting into the Jaguar style, with excellent dynamics, high level of comfort, good build quality and, at the same time, an attractive price. It is worth noting that the last compact sedan in the English family, the Jaguar Mark 1, was developed in 1955.

To reduce the cost of production, when creating the car, they used the existing platform from the third generation Ford Mondeo. To remake it for an all-wheel drive model, and even with a transverse power unit, the engineers had to do a lot of magic over it.

And now, two years later, in February 2001, at the Geneva Motor Show, the X− Type was first presented to the general public. The presentation of the new model has become a decoration of the entire exhibition. Tests carried out by journalists have confirmed to the public that, despite its size, this is still a real Jaguar. The recognizable body features, powerful engines, luxury in the cabin and permanent all-wheel drive impressed the visitors of the showroom.

In 2003, the car underwent a slight restyling. The updated model received a new 2.0 liter turbocharged diesel engine Ford Duratorq with 130 hp. In addition, front-wheel drive modifications of the X-Type appeared on sale, and in 2004 the X-Type Estate station wagon was released. The model was in good demand. Despite this, having undergone minor changes in 2005 and 2008, Jaguar still had to retire. On July 15, 2009, due to financial problems of Ford, the management of the concern announced the termination of production of the X-Type.

Technical features and characteristics

Most often on Russian roads there are specimens with a 2.5 liter V6 engine. The engine is quite high-torque - the variable length of the intake manifold allows for maximum torque in the range from 2500 to 6000 rpm. The camber at 60 ° dampens almost all vibrations during the operation of the power unit. Also, cars with a 2.1-liter diesel engine from Ford that appeared later were in good demand. Interesting fact: When idling, this motor makes a purr like a cat. The company's specialists claim that their minders worked for a very long time and specially reconfigured the intake system for the sake of such a thoroughbred sound.

Gearboxes - Ford 5-speed manual and Japanese automatic. Mechanical boxes are distinguished by their reliability and unpretentiousness, which cannot be said about the "automatic" cars of the first two or three years of production. Jaguar even ran a recall campaign to replace the automatic transmission. Their clutches often burned and incorrectly changed gears. All-wheel drive is built according to the classic scheme, where 60% of the torque goes to the rear axle, and 40% to the front. When the wheels slip, using sensors, the torque is redistributed to the axle with a high coefficient of adhesion.

The body rigidity of the X-Type is higher than the previous leader - the BMW 3 Series - by almost 30%. A well-designed suspension provides the car with good handling and the absence of unnecessary vibration and noise. In the front there is a reliable MacPherson strut on double wishbones, in the back there is a fully independent multi-link system, assembled, like the front, on a subframe. There were minor comments on squeaks in the rear suspension, but the flaw was quickly eliminated by replacing a pair of silent blocks. On cars of the Sport version, a reconfigured front and rear suspension, larger wheels, sports seats are installed.

The interior of the car is quite comfortable. Genuine wood inserts and leather upholstery will not fade over time. The plastic of the instrument panel is of high quality. The ergonomics of the driver's seat are well thought out. There is enough space in the front, but a little cramped in the back. It's almost impossible to sit with the three of us. And landing on the second row of seats is difficult. The complaint is caused by the blowing of the windshield - ice forms on its upper part, which cannot be removed even by turning on the stove at maximum power.

British engineers paid much attention to the safety of the car. All possible variants of accidents were worked out. Even as standard, there are eight airbags in the car. Also, the database already has ABS with traction control and anti-slip systems, electrically heated mirrors, electric windows and mirrors, an audio system, 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning and fog lights

Exploitation

As a rule, operating the vehicle in difficult conditions entails additional costs. When using low-quality fuel containing a large amount of sulfur, you will have to change the spark plugs every 20-30 thousand kilometers - the procedure is not cheap, since for this you need to remove the intake manifold.

Approximately every 50,000 km, cleaning of the injectors of the injection system from various deposits will be required. Catalysts (there are two of them in Iksa) also rarely drive more than 90 thousand km - replacing them will cost a pretty penny.

The suspension on the car is quite hardy: even the struts and stabilizer bushings go 30-40 thousand kilometers without problems. Most often, rubber suspension elements, such as arm silent blocks, require replacement. But brake pads rarely go more than 35,000 km.

The body of the model is strong, galvanized. But you can often see specimens with flying off paint on the rear wheel arches - a consequence of the effect of anti-icing reagents, which are so generously sprinkled on our roads. But rust on the body is most likely associated with poor-quality body repair.

The main disadvantage of the car is its low liquidity at secondary market... There is even a joke that the quickest way to sell a Jaguar is to insure it and set it on fire.

In January 2011, the company's management announced its intention to release the X-Type successor in 2014.

"Jaguar X-Type" is a car over the creation of which the developers and specialists of the world famous concern thought for a long time. They wanted to create a unique and compact sedan that would harmoniously fit into the style of the brand. The car was supposed to be dynamic, flawless, comfortable, of high quality, and with a more or less attractive price. Well, they did it.

Briefly about release and production

The Jaguar X-Type debuted in Geneva in 2001. This model is produced by an English plant located in Birmingham. Previously, a car was assembled there. The company invested about $ 400 million in modern assembly lines. Also, funds were used to create a high-quality body and develop a fashionable interior trim. In addition, the equipment was updated by 70% and, of course, the computer control system of the so-called press production was not left unattended. And a railway line was laid to the plant in order to send cars for export on trains. And finally, new personnel were recruited for the development and production of new items. Each of the future employees underwent a 350 hour training course. So the company prepared thoroughly for the production of the Jaguar X-Type.

Peculiarities

"Jaguar X-Type" - the most massive car Jaguar in its history. In general, I must say, the car is atypical. This is the first all-wheel drive car produced by the company. Moreover, and with a power unit located transversely. Moreover, there is a kinship with “Ford”: the platform is based on the latest generation Mondeo platform.

The design of the Jaguar X-Type is a separate topic. The modern exterior was created in the best traditions of the company. The image of the car combines the features of three cars produced by the company. The nose piece was taken from the XJ. The glazing and profile are borrowed from the S-Type. And the steep wing hips and characteristic stern were taken over to the XK8. The result is a car with an aggressive design and a luxurious interior. And the picture was completed by excellent handling and a decent level of comfort. Unsurprisingly, the car quickly became popular.

Design

Cooling system "Jaguar X-Type", its body, wheel formula, suspension - all this deserves special attention. The car has all four wheels - driving! All-wheel drive is undoubtedly a huge plus for any car. And here you don't need to pay extra for it. That is why “Jaguar X-Type” receives such positive feedback from the owners. Even fans of fast and dynamic driving are not very upset, because 60% of the torque is transferred to the rear wheels.

The developers paid great attention to the torsional strength of the body. The creators of the car say that the rigidity of the structure is a third higher than that of the well-known leader - the BMW 3 Series.

Salon

Jaguar cars have always featured luxurious interiors. Designers always use the maximum of high quality wood and genuine leather. And, best of all, all of this is included in the basic configuration. The interior can be safely called English, "Jaguar". almost vertical - it is replete with wooden inserts. Longitudinal retraction on the armchairs and exquisite, beautiful doors with intricate pockets are noticeable. Also, the speaker grill is decorated with chrome rims. All this clearly shows excellent taste and a share of luxury.

The steering column can be adjusted in two planes. The length and angle of inclination, the height of the back and front of the pillow, the pumping of the so-called lumbar support - all this can be adjusted! However, there is no memory for settings. But using the various functions is very simple. Air conditioner, for example. The large information display and easy-to-understand buttons make the control process quick and easy. And also in the cabin, separate lighting, which is a very practical function.

"Jaguar X-Type": technical characteristics

The proven "MacPherson" is installed in front, naturally on the double wishbones. The rear is assembled on a stretcher (of course, multi-link). This design ensures excellent cornering, vibration and noise reduction.

The sporty chassis is in perfect harmony with the temperamental powertrains. Even the basic version is impressive. And that's a 2.5-liter V-six. The engine, of course, is not new, but not bad. Its power reaches 194 liters. with. There is also a more impressive unit - 231-horsepower, three-liter. Also V-shaped "six". The motor, by the way, is of higher quality and more solid than that of the Lexus or BMW.

Potential buyers can also purchase a sports version. Its distinctive feature is the retuned suspension and large wheels. Also as an attachment are sports chairs and the absence of any chrome parts. And the versions are completed with Ford manual transmissions or Japanese "automatic machines".

Economical option

And I would like to highlight one more model. This is the Jaguar X-Type diesel. Everyone knows that cars with such a power unit are famous for their economy. And Jaguar is no exception. So, in Russia, most diesel versions exist with a black interior. Looks elegant and beautiful. However, I would like to draw attention not to the interior, but to the technical characteristics.

This model has good handling and fairly modest fuel consumption. Approximately 8.5 liters per hundred “city” kilometers. And on the highway it consumes a little more than 5.5 liters. The suspension is average, which is also pleasing. For Russia, by the way, the clearance was increased. So the car is suitable for our roads. The clearance is 16 centimeters - not bad for a branded sedan.

"Jaguar X-Type" (diesel) receives positive reviews. Satisfied owners mark as a separate item a roomy trunk (which also increases), convenient control of systems and organs (for example, CD and radio), “wheels” located on the steering wheel. Generally comfortable and economical car that many people like - and this is proven by the reviews.

Security level

"Jaguar X-Type" receives positive reviews not only because of its extraordinary appearance and richly decorated interior. The level of security is also important. And the manufacturers also paid a lot of attention to this nuance.

175 thousand hours - this is how much time the company's specialists spent to carry out computer processing of data related to assessing the safety of the model. What a lot of time spent doing research! Thanks to the analyzes carried out, it was possible to optimize the interaction of the chassis with the transmission, body structure, trim parts and, of course, with passive safety devices. All these actions were not done in vain. Absolutely all components work as a whole, thus providing maximum protection for both passengers and drivers. Dual airbags with a modern sensor system, belts, and other details provide a decent level of safety and integrity of the vehicle.

Modifications

This model exists in various versions. The 4-door sedan alone, which was released from 2008 to 2010, is available in five variants. The “weakest” one is characterized by a 145-horsepower 2.2-liter diesel engine and a 6-speed “mechanics”. The most powerful boasts a 231 hp engine. with. (volume - 3 liters) and 5-speed automatic transmission.

The 2004-2008 5-door station wagon is available in 8 variants. The spread of power units is large - from 130-horsepower diesel, ending with the same 231-horsepower, three-liter. You can still find (used, of course) 4-door sedans from 2001-2008. There, the engines also start with a 130 "horsepower" diesel and end with a 3-liter gasoline engine.

What is the price of such a car? It all depends on the year of manufacture, condition and, of course, technical characteristics. For example, the 2007 version, with a 2-liter 156-horsepower engine, front-wheel drive and automatic transmission, will cost about half a million rubles. Quite a reasonable price, although there are cheaper models. In general, to take or not to take is everyone's business. There are now Jaguar fans who are happy to buy this car and drive it with pleasure.

With a triple body, the X-Type is instantly identifiable in the current stream, standing out sharply against the backdrop of fashionable and current models. It does not make honor the last. In terms of the number of folded heads, the baby Jaguar is far from its older brothers, but the public definitely has an interest in the gracefully gliding sedan. Few of his contemporaries rivals can boast of this.

Soberly speaking, the choice of who to face the X-Type had little. Flirting with a mass consumer, the British decided to rely on time-tested solutions. Without daring to exploit the exterior theme set by the S-Type, they followed the beaten path of the Germans, adapting the exterior of the flagship sedans for a compact format.

Classic XJ owners can grimace at those little round eyes, lamenting the inappropriateness of a mascot cat on the hood of an illegitimate offspring of a noble family. The "big-eyed" style, a tribute to the exteriors of the great Jeff Lawson, which have become synonymous with aristocracy and nobility, has successfully approached the Mondeo relative.

Inside

The thoroughbred appearance is echoed by the beige interior lavishly decorated with wood. Metal rims flicker on an almost vertical high dashboard, an animal muzzle grins from the steering wheel, an automatic machine with a pear-shaped knob walks along the proprietary J-shaped slot - at first glance, the difference with the older XJ is only in the volume of the space around you. Those who have seen the interiors of flagship sedans only in pictures will not notice the catch.

But the touch is different, and the more I look around, the more I realize that I am in high-quality, yet inexpensive Jaguar XJ-themed decorations. Genuine leather was found only on the steering wheel, on the seats and doors - its eco-substitute, and everything else is just light plastic. Finishing the skins of innocently killed cows was for an extra charge, as were the rear power windows and "automatic". Can you imagine an aristocratic "Briton" with a velor interior, "on a stick" and with "oars"? The tree, by the way, is also not natural.

Ford was greedy or Jaguar saved - it doesn't matter. The X-Type in the second-ranked configuration is not much inferior to the initial versions of German colleagues, who likewise do not disdain eco-leather and plastic wood. For a surcharge, the interior of the British could be refined exactly no worse than the S-Type. Here, at least, an optional multimedia screen asks - an expensive, but effective way to clean the center console from buttons made of cheap black plastic.

They obviously did not economize on ergonomics. No high society eccentricities were found in the logic of the button layout. Basic electric seats with only cushion height adjustment perfectly combine a comfortable and imposing fit with a tenacious hug. It will also be convenient for rear passengers: the inclined bed of the sofa is conducive to long trips. But only two people will be comfortable and no higher than average height. Alas, there is no room for the legs and heads of tall individuals, and it was necessary to pay extra for the central armrest. But the trunk, visually small, is actually capable of taking as much as 450 liters of something.

Engine

V6 2.1 L, 156 HP

The second Ford Mondeo is a tough middle peasant and one of the bestsellers in the European middle class. But it was because of his relationship with him that the X-Type was regularly trolled. The excuse that no more than 20% of Ford parts were used in the design did not always help. Most of all fell into the initial versions. Front-wheel drive Jaguar - where is the aristocracy? But the engine, albeit 2.1 liters, but the V 6 is not like the four cylinders of the base motors of competitors. And in terms of forces / newtons (156 hp / 196 Nm), he is not an outsider: it is worth taking a look, say, at the characteristics of the two-liter E46. And front-wheel drive has never prevented Audi from making a good cash register on simple A4 trim levels.

Excuses, excuses, in fact, what? Listening to the whisper of the V6, the engine's relationship to Ford's Duratec is the last thing you think about. The soundtrack of the engine to a large extent also forms the impression of the accelerating dynamics, about the passport data of which (more than 10 seconds to a hundred) it is better to be silent in a decent society. The lion's share of traction is available from idle, so the X-Type leaves confidently, no more. But cat sedans are not used to annealing from traffic lights, this is not a lordly thing.

Transmission

Jatco automatic transmission, 5 steps

Acceleration is smooth, almost seamless. You won't guess about the work of the Japanese Jatco machine gun, gently turning over its five steps, without looking at the tachometer needle. Sport mode regularly maintains increased revs, not dropping below 2,000 rpm and delays switching, but fundamentally does not change the behavior of the X-Type. Character! Therefore, there is no need to regret the absence of a manual gear selection mode. The driver has only the option to limit the number of steps to four, three or two.

Jaguar is always a story not only about design and wood in the cabin. It is enough just once to taste how insinuatingly an English sedan creeps along the road, unquestioningly obeying the will of the owner, gently working out irregularities and enveloping from head to toe with an inimitable mixture of comfort and sport - and this will never be forgotten. X-Type tries its best not to shame the honor of the family. The ride is comfortable, the suspension is always ready for road troubles. Even more resilience can be expected from the Sport package, but even there to the stiffness of German counterparts - like from London to Berlin.

The suspension is built according to the classic scheme. Front - McPherson struts, rear - multi-link. You should not expect the excitement of rear-wheel drive relatives, BMW and Mercedes are also from another league, but Jaguar will definitely not become a whipping boy among other near-premium front-wheel drive vehicles, including Alfa Romeo, Saab and Volvo. Despite the somewhat detached steering and softness, even the pliability of the brakes, the X-Type knows how to accurately take turns, giving pleasure to driving, and braking confidently where it is needed. Going for a traditional English picnic is no problem. With a ground clearance of 170 mm, the baby-Jag is almost a crossover by today's standards. Just do not try to exceed the speed when returning after dark. At night, the "kitten" is half-blind - the dipped beam of small headlights, imitating the XJ, is frankly weak.

Jaguar x-type
Fuel consumption per 100 km

In contrast to the composure of competitors with their harsh chassis, the Jaguar offers softness and smoothness in behavior, which in no way turns into roll. It is a special pleasure to fly the X-Type in a relaxed way. Power and acceleration in such scenery and silence (noise insulation is at a very high level here) are not decisive. It's funny to see how the plastic imitation of a real English living room makes you a true gentleman on the road.

Alas, there were fewer fans of English classics at a reasonable price than expected. Sales of X-Type never reached the planned level, and now it is not customary to remember the younger "kitten" with a kind word. Let it be so - the interested glances of others and the laudatory memories of the former owners speak for themselves.

Purchase history

Like many lovers of aristocratic technology, Eugene has always been crazy about the classic forms of the Jaguar XJ X308. A squat silhouette, big-eyed optics - but the expediency of buying such a car as the main vehicle, and even with a limited budget, gave off unhealthy adventurism. The slightly more compact S-type was dropped for aesthetic reasons, so only the youngest X-Type remained from the feline family.

The search for a worthy copy took six months - and finally in Moscow there was an advertisement for the sale of a 2007 pre-styling X-Type in raspberry color with a beige interior and a mileage of 84,000 km. Wealthy owners sold the Jaguar, which had become unnecessary, which was once bought by their son as the first car. Rushing to Moscow next weekend, Evgeny was fascinated by the stylish "Briton", sparkling with a highly polished body. The owners did not hide the fact of the presence of several accidents, which, however, did not affect the power structure of the body, but they made a good discount. For 390,000 rubles, Evgeny became the third owner of an English sedan.

Repair

Ignition misfires and jerks during smooth acceleration are one of the corporate sores of the younger X-Type engine. What Eugene has not tried. The throttle, fuel pump, ignition coils, spark plugs, intake manifold gaskets, absolute pressure sensor were replaced, injectors were washed ... Not at the same time, but more than 100,000 rubles were spent to fix this problem. The issue has not yet been finally resolved, the only remaining option is to replace the wires with ignition coils.

Leaving the service, where the catalysts were removed to the Jaguar, Eugene was faced with the fact that the reverse gear on the X-Type stopped turning on. A break in the brake band led to the repair of the box and costs in the region of 60,000 rubles. The antifreeze leak has not yet been eliminated - replacing the expansion tank did not bring any results.

The suspension is strong enough. So far, Eugene has only faced the replacement of bushings and stabilizer struts, shock absorber anthers and hub bearings.

Exploitation

For two years of ownership, Evgeny increased the X-Type mileage to 130,000 km. He does not regret his choice at all.

Expenses

  • regular maintenance with oil change (6 liters Castrol 5 W-30) and filters every 10,000 km - 4,000 rubles
  • gasoline - AI-95

The notorious relationship with Mondeo when selecting spare parts does not always help out. For example, a generator labeled Jaguar costs 40,000 rubles, and a similar Ford one can be bought four times cheaper. The opposite example is the timing belt tensioner roller: only the original with a price in the region of 10,000 rubles.

Plans

The main task for the future is to eliminate the already indicated misfires and antifreeze leaks. After solving technical problems, Eugene wants to update the appearance of the X-Type, touching up the front bumper from chips and covering the body with liquid glass.

Model history

The project of the affordable Jaguar, which received the in-house code X400, was implemented during the Coventry-based manufacturer's tenure as part of the premium Ford division of the Premier Automotive Group. The British rival of the "three-ruble" BMW and Mercedes C-class was based on the platform of the second generation Ford Mondeo, on which the interior and body, stylized as the flagship XJ, were hoisted. Three years later, the Sportwagon station wagon made up the company to the sedan released in 2001.

In the photo: Jaguar XJ "1994-2003

At first, only six-cylinder all-wheel drive X-Type were available with engines 2.5 (194 hp) and 3.0 (231 hp), combined with a five-speed "mechanics" or "automatic". In 2003, the economical front-wheel drive versions debuted: a petrol V 6 2.1 (156 hp) and a pair of diesels (2.0 - 128 hp and 2.2 - 152 hp) - for the first time on a Jaguar. In 2005, the X-Type underwent a minor update. These cars are primarily distinguished by a modified radiator grille and a new steering wheel.

In the photo: Jaguar XJ6 "2003–07

The large-scale restyling of 2007 slightly refreshed the ageless appearance, added new options and trim options, and the older diesel engine was able to be equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. Alas, the planned sales of the X-Type never reached, so it was discontinued in 2009.

Model history and overview

- a powerful and fast beast that you will tame. The car made its debut at the Geneva AW Tosalon in 2001.

The X-Type is produced by the plant in the English county of Merseyside, which used to assemble the Ford Escort. The company has invested over $ 400 million in new body and trim assembly lines, a 70% revamped spray booth equipment and a computerized press production control system. To ensure that up to 90 percent of exported X-Types leave the factory by train, a branch line has been connected to it. We also paid much attention to personnel training. On average, each worker spent 350 hours on refresher courses.

X-Type sedans and X-Type Estate station wagons are Jaguar's most massive AW vehicles ever.

The emergence of the X-Type is explained by the growing popularity of luxury sedans of the D class (Mercedes C-class, BMW 3 Series, Audi A4), which are becoming more equipped and technically advanced and more and more expensive, approaching the higher class - E.

In general, the X-Type is an atypical Jaguar. And it's not just about size. This is the first all-wheel drive model of the brand, and even with a transversely located power unit. Plus the relationship with Ford - the latest generation Mondeo platform is used.

The modern attractive design was created in the best traditions of the company. The appearance of the X-Tapy combines the features of the three models of the company. The nose section was borrowed from the XJ, the S-Type profile and glazing, the characteristic stern and steep hips of the XK8 hind wings. Aggressive design, expensive interior, excellent handling and comfort are the main components of success.

The X-Type has four drive wheels! The 4x4 formula has its advantages without a doubt. There are more and more fans of this scheme in the world every day, and besides, buyers (in any case, as the price list says) will not have to pay extra for all-wheel drive. Fans of fast driving, if they will be upset, then not too much, because 60 percent of the torque is transmitted to the rear wheels.

The creators of the AW car paid the closest attention to the torsional rigidity of the body. As the designers humbly note, the X-Type's body rigidity is 30 percent higher than that of the former leader, the BMW 3 Series.

Suspension. Front - time-tested McPherson double wishbone. The rear is completely independent multi-link, assembled, by the way, like the front, on a stretcher. Such a scheme promises not only confident cornering, but also a significant reduction in noise and vibration levels.

The sports chassis is accompanied by temperamental engines. Even the base X-Type is equipped with a 2.5-liter V-six. The motor, although not new (based on the S-Type power unit), is pleasant in all respects. Quite convincing power of 194 hp. with. combined with an excellent torque of 24.9 kgs.m. The variable intake manifold length allows the engine to remove 90% of thrust from 2500 to 6000 rpm. This ensures smooth acceleration in virtually any gear. And the so-called natural camber of 60 degrees of cylinders should, in theory, ensure smooth operation without strong vibration. The 231 horsepower of the more powerful 3.0-liter V-six is more than the BMW and Lexus engines deliver.

In addition, a Sport version is offered with both engines. Its main difference is the reconfigured suspension, larger wheels, sports seats and the complete absence of chrome decor.

The X-Type is equipped with a Ford manual and a Japanese AW automatic transmission.

Jaguar's brainchildren have always been distinguished by rich interior trim. A maximum of wood and leather as standard. The interior is purely English, Jaguar: an almost vertical high dashboard with wood-like inserts, longitudinal retracts on the seats, beautiful doors with intricate pockets and speaker nets with chrome rims. Everything is done with taste and a certain amount of chic.

The steering column is adjustable in two planes. There are plenty of adjustments. In addition to the obligatory length and angle of inclination of the backrest, you can change the height of the front and rear parts of the pillow (separately), plus pumping up the lumbar support. But there is no memory for the settings. Operating the air conditioner is easy - thanks to the clear buttons and the large information display. Separate interior lighting.

Brakes, noise and vibration isolation also deserve only kind words. There are no extraneous sounds - neither from the suspension, nor from interior elements, in the cabin.

We paid special attention to safety. Jaguar has spent over 175,000 hours computing the X-type safety data. Starting from the development of the concept and ending with the moment the AW vehicle left the assembly line, numerous studies were carried out, during which the safety of the AW vehicle was assessed in various collisions. The analysis made it possible to understand in detail and optimize the interaction of the body structure, transmission, chassis, interior trim parts and passive safety devices. Bottom line: All components work as a single system, ensuring maximum safety for the driver and passengers. The passive restraint systems fitted to the X-Type include dual airbags with a sophisticated sensor system as standard.

NOW JAGUARS ARE A PROPERTY OF NOT ONLY A FEW

In 1936, the British SS Car Company released the first convertible Jaguar SS-100, establishing itself as a manufacturer of powerful sports cars and luxury sedans. Utilitarian motorcycle sidecars are gone. For three quarters of a century, the name of the brand has been strongly associated with the highest spheres and aristocratic techniques, with the smell of expensive leather, exquisite perfumes, etc. of money. Yes, yes, only the wealthiest trainers could afford to tame a purebred cat.

The new owner of the Jaguar (the company received this name after the war, when the abbreviation SS became odious) - Ford Corporation - decided to release a more affordable middle-class model (category D according to the European classification). The way to reduce the cost (and from it - to an affordable price) is unification with already produced models. And although all European Fords are front-wheel drive, accusations of an attempt on the holy of holies of the Jaguar - the classic layout - were almost avoided by using the platform of the future all-wheel drive Mondeo. The result was .

THE YOUNGER SCRIBE OF A NOTICEABLE KIND.

The pedigree is in perfect order, the family resemblance is evident: a silhouette creeping above the ground, double round (more precisely, elliptical) headlights, embossed undershooting on the hood, tapering stern, characteristic lanterns. What is not a miniature copy of the XJ8?

And on the go. The motor mounted on the hydraulic mounts is quiet and inaudible, shaking and vibrations are cut off by rubber bushings on two subframes. Occasionally wide tires slap on the asphalt, which is even nice - they say, well, and I have powerful bast shoes! But the creaking and tapping in the rear suspension is at first perceived as a hallucination - it can't be! Discouraged, you grab onto a saving thought - perhaps something is wrong in our particular car.

How many are there under the hood? Nearly two hundred horses for two and a half liters of working volume - let's let them frolic on the asphalt. At the same time, we will enjoy the regal roar with rumblings and overflows. We will feel irrepressible, but at the same time smooth, without fussy jerks, acceleration. An angry, hectic rya-a-a-avk! with metallic notes could belong to many of the four-wheeled predators. Even those rootless who live in flocks and are not overshadowed by legendary names. There was also an acceleration: comprehending the driver's wish, the AW tomato quickly snapped off the set number of gears down and allowed it to start without hesitation. Yes. The Jaguar drives and slows down perfectly.

WHAT HAS THE CREATOR RELEASED ON?

Passengers, meanwhile, grumble: oh, it is inconvenient to sit back, oh, the doors open at a small angle, oh, the head rests on the roof. But the silhouette, but the breed! Anyway, the main person here is sitting at the wheel - we will listen to him.

And he gave it out: the legs are cramped, the tomato AW selector hangs in some intermediate positions and needs supervision while you move it along the proprietary winding ruler. In the interior trim, leather is interspersed with inexpensive stamped plastic, and the inserts on the panel and console under the expensive trim stone slightly do not match in color and texture. Moreover, a wooden lever sticks out in the middle - what should it be combined with?

Take it easy with criticism - Jaguar, after all. And the bucket seats are flexible and the steering wheel is comfortable? And eight airbags, and climate control, and music, and all sorts of electric drives, and an electric heated windshield, after all?

Uh-uh, my friend. For this, it is not necessary to be born a Jaguar - many animals have simpler radio and electric drives. For which it was worth paying forty thousand dollars - modern bells and whistles can be bought much cheaper. Although, let's be fair, this is not a big price to pay for the opportunity to utter the cherished words of my Jaguar.

He made his debut at the Geneva AW Tosalon in the spring of 2001. Built with elements of the Ford-Mondeo platform, this is the first all-wheel drive Jaguar, and even with a transverse engine. It is produced only with a sedan body and petrol V6 engines with a volume of 2.5 and 3.0 liters, with five-speed (manual or AW tomatic) gearboxes.

Reasonable price for a thoroughbred car.

- The quality falls short of the high brand image.

Have you ever been disappointed with a movie that you heard the most rave reviews about before watching? So the Jaguar is good, but the name obliges to more.

JAGUAR X-TYPE 2.0d: GOOD HUMP

Sergey Kanunnikov

Driving # 7 2006

Seeing the nameplate on the trunk of the Jaguar, a colleague grumbled skeptically: "The cat was drunk with diesel fuel." Indeed, the combination of classic style, albeit the most inexpensive model of the famous British brand, associated with luxury and speed, and a low rumbling from under the hood, at first causes confusion.

ELEGANT DYNAMIC SALOON AND DIESEL ARE INCOMPATIBLE?

NOTHING LIKE THIS!

Designers cannot deny taste and the ability to combine classics with modern ergonomics requirements. True, sitting in the cabin, decorated modestly, but with taste worthy of a “cat's” pedigree, you do not immediately recognize that there is a diesel engine under the hood. Even when accelerating in place, the reason for the low but quiet rumbling can be considered a tuned exhaust system. Only at traffic lights, when switching to idle, a small, characteristic diesel tremor ran along the pedals and the gear lever in a few seconds.

I didn't immediately get used to a very hard leather chair. Is it for athletic composure? Does a rather big sedan with a 130-horsepower diesel engine need it? It turned out to be needed!

Landing back is not very comfortable, and there is not much room - such is the price for a squat, swift silhouette. The JAGUAR X-TYPE 2.0d is priced at $ 38,900 in the Executive trim level. Boldly and deeply pressing the pedal, I felt how hard my back rested against the back. I did not have time to recover, and the tachometer needle is already at the red zone! Second gear ... Alas, it's time to slow down. This "Jaguar" is doing less confidently. Efficiency is normal, but the control algorithm is not ideal: the free play is too large. And when it finally ends, the pedal is still kind of soft. It takes time to get used to this feature.

But what is the engine! Rudolph Diesel would surely be pleased. I'll try to make fun of the car. On the second, it gets under way, almost without indignation, just play a little with the clutch. The motor pulls perfectly from about 1200 rpm. The arrow quickly passes the 2000 rpm mark, and then ... the AW car seemed to have thrown off a couple of centners of mass or connected a couple of cylinders.

I continue my risky experiments. In the rise in third gear from 1000 rpm, the engine pulls reluctantly. But this is really a mockery: modern diesel engines, "sharpened" under strict environmental standards, do not accept this. But in a dense, slow flow, without sharp accelerations and without steep climbs - the "cat" is quite ready to pull from 1000 rpm even at the third. Urban, but dynamic, without regard to economy, driving, judging by the message of the on-board computer and the movement of the fuel level indicator needle, costs about 8 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km.

And the initial cost for the "JAGUAR X-TYPE 2.0d" is $ 33,900 for the basic version (Entry equipment). Considering the cozy interior, decent handling (a dynamic car responds to steering quite obediently, but without tiring harshness), expressive design and excellent engine, not much at all.

In general, skepticism is not justified: the diesel fuel did not harm the "cat" at all. Her rumbling is not at all loud and indignant, on the contrary - contented and kind.

Test Drive

On the eve of the presentation of the most important model in the last 30 years, the Jaguar management decided to republish and supplement the famous book by Eric Daimok "The Jaguar File", which describes in detail all the pets that have been published from the company's "aviaries" since its inception in 1922 year.

This 432 page contains photographs of every AW vehicle Sir William Loyens has ever built, from the first sidecar to the latest masterpiece. In total, the book contains over 200 photographs of cars. Some AW cars are fast, others are slow, some are ancient, others are modern, but none of them can be called ugly. However, if every Jaguar AW car is a masterpiece, then why, you ask, the AW car experts don't expect anything special from the new X-Type? This is probably due to the fact that the X-Type is Jaguar's first attempt at a mass-market AW vehicle since its merger with Ford. Critics may be confused by the low price, so not typical of AW Jaguar cars. Or maybe the whole point is that the new AW car is built on the Ford platform and has similar parts to the European Mondeo.

By simple math, the new X-Type is even more Jaguar than the outstanding S-Type. According to Jaguar's vice president of public relations, Simon Sproul, the S-Type shares about 40% of the components with Lincoln, while the X-Type borrowed only 20% from Mondeo. Apart from the platform, engine block and transmission, everything else in the X-Type is Jaguar.

But even though the new AW car is powered by the same Duratec V6 engine that powers the Ford Taurus, parts such as the cylinder cover, intake manifold and exhaust system are of British origin. The result is a three-liter V6 engine with 231 horsepower. compared to the Ford, which has 31 fewer horses. Even the downsized 2.5-liter version of the engine boasts 194bhp.

Both the 3-liter and 2.5-liter X-Type are as good as their rivals. The X-Type with a three-liter V6 engine is as powerful as the BMW 330xi and has the same torque as the Mercedes C320. According to the manufacturers, the X-Type 3.0 with a manual gearbox is capable of accelerating from standstill to a speed of 100 km / h in 6.9 seconds. This is the same result as the all-wheel drive sedan of the BMW 330xi.

The X-Type developers explain that the advantage of the AW car lies in the valve timing mechanism. If the technical characteristics are pleasantly surprising, then the steering is simply shocking. The X-Type boasts the athletic grace of German sedans. According to the manufacturers, they deliberately moved away from tradition in order to attract the attention of the younger generation of AW enthusiasts. “We don't just want to create a miniature version of the 'big' Jaguar.

The X-Type sports steering will appeal to buyers in the under 40 who love to buy BMW AW vehicles, ”said company spokesman Mike Cross.

Much confidence is given to the X-Type all-wheel drive, which is akin to that on the Audi Quattro, and the transmission distributes power in such a way that 40% of the power goes to the front-wheel drive, and 60% to the rear. This is a very successful combination, as it emphasizes the sporty nature of the AW car. In fact, the X-Type behaves like a rear-wheel drive AW car in most situations.

The steering is light and precise, although it differs a little inadequate response of the AW vehicle to the steering wheel inherent in all-wheel drive Mercedes. In bad weather the baby Jag proved to be a reliable stable AW car. The X-Type raced through the puddles so, the word is dry asphalt. The car is available with 2 suspension options: standard and sport, but even the standard version is much "sportier" than any Jaguar sedan.

The sporty package includes a dynamic stability control system, a stiffer suspension that is lowered by 10 mm and 17-inch wheels wrapped in Continental tires for excellent wet grip.

By developing the interior of the X-Type, manufacturers have continued the "German" tradition. And in comparison with the cozy Jaguar salons, the interior of the new AW car can be called "Spartan". Both wood and leather were used in the finishes, of course, but not in the amount and combination that you would expect from the company, which is said to create such a cozy atmosphere in the cabin that it feels like you are sitting in front of a fireplace. However, the interior is notable for the luxury of a Mercedes C320. Many experts believe that it is not at all bad to abandon old traditions and keep up with the times, however, it is foolish to reinvent the wheel and forget about previous achievements, such as, for example, a comfortable interior.

In more detail about the interior, we can say the following: the seats are upholstered in standard Connolly Jaguar leather, the driver's seat adjusts to the dimensions of any driver. The car is equipped with a standard climate control system, AW tomato power windows, a cassette audio system, armrests that can be adjusted for the driver and front passenger, as well as a rising and falling armrest for rear passengers. On the steering wheel there are buttons for controlling cruise control systems, an audio system and a telephone. The standard safety system includes ABS, front and side airbags.

Went "to the people"

The small “jaguar” appeared as a very peculiar AW car. It turned out that the X-Type is very difficult to evaluate unambiguously, since anyone can easily put it in both positive and negative light, while managing to show indifference to the legendary English brand.

Repeating for the millionth time the incantation about the unpopularity of diesel in our market, sometimes you really want to become a part of Europe. In the meantime, pouring diesel fuel of dubious quality into the gas tank, you still have to listen to comments about the exorbitant coolness of 2.5- and 3-liter engines for the X-Type model, which must certainly be accompanied by a declaration of love for all-wheel drive and no less complete " minced meat ". Try to travel for 1000 rubles all weekend without even completely using up the contents of a 60-liter fuel tank. After such feats, I even more want the diesel “Jaguar” to succeed - however, consciousness for some reason resists, not allowing to properly deploy support for blind faith in a miracle.

Noises and odors are especially disturbing. The rattling jaguar makes a double impression on many: the status of an aristocratic brand and the tractor accompaniment contradict each other. The sound of a diesel engine sounds like a verdict, and it makes absolutely no difference that it has low fuel consumption. One turn of the key and you are a tractor driver, but you have a famous cat on the steering wheel - you must admit, very strange sensations. The first meters, accompanied by 2 liters of working volume, turbine, 130 hp. and a mechanical 5-speed gearbox predach give birth to different thoughts, but still suicidal prevail among them. There is not enough traction from low revs in the first gear, so you have to get a handle not to stall, like a mediocre student of the AW school in the second lesson. Then it becomes a little easier. The little Jago drives only after 3000 rpm, so you need to constantly drive it into this rev zone, and only after that driving starts to bring joy. By the way, the average consumption for the entire time did not exceed 9 liters.

After a set of 3 thousand rpm of AW, the car seems to be transformed - it behaves perfectly, relying on a well-known platform, the engine noise in the cabin is not heard at all, the suspension is very comfortable and on the go quickly gives an idea of what the word comfort means at the moment in understanding this AW car brand. But in this case, it is worth making an amendment to the fact that the X-Type is still not quite the usual Jaguar. It is too strikingly different from the classics in all respects, starting with its size. This is perhaps the main problem with this model.

But no matter what anyone says, it is really pleasant to be in the cabin of this AW car. Is that not in the rear seats, where there is clearly not enough space for more or less large people. The seats, by the way, are quite comfortable, you just need to find your own settings. It is also worth working with the steering wheel, which is trimmed with wood and leather, which does not have a very good effect on the grip of the hands on its working surface.

The center console benefits significantly from the touch screen, which allows you to manipulate a huge variety of functions, but first you need to set everything up while standing still, so that in motion you can get your finger at the right points without being distracted, without taking your eyes off the road. By the way, the screen glares a little and certainly gets dirty, so you need to prepare yourself for this, as well as for the presence of many plastic buttons from the Ford Mondeo model, which is a supplier of many parts for.

In general, the AW car made a good impression, but at the same time did not leave the feeling that a real Jaguar was nearby for several days. He saved money, but did not give luxury - this is the main problem of little Jago. They are choosing it now as an alternative to bored competitors, for which queues are constantly lining up. In addition, Jaguar is not hijacked, which also plays a big role. Now such a model can be bought for less than 40 thousand dollars, while reasonably counting on a good discount and various gifts. So at least this AW car definitely deserves a test drive with passion - try to give it a chance, but do not forget to check the service prices.

The AutoWeek Editor's Choice 2001 award was honored on 28 February 2001 by Jaguar's Managing Director Jonathan Browning for Most Significant New Product at the Geneva Motor Show. The new Jaguar X-Type compact business sedan was presented for the first time. From that moment on, the dramatic story of the continuer of the traditions of the well-deserved Jaguar brand began.

Designed under the code name X400, the Jaguar X-Type was the first compact (relative to the rest of the Jaguar lineup) 4-door sedan since the 1955 Jaguar Mark 1. The BMW 3 Series was chosen as the main competitor. The new compact Jaguar received the Ford Mondeo platform, but for the purpose of a cardinal difference it was made with all-wheel drive and is equipped with 2.5- and 3.0-liter AJ-V6 petrol engines.

The outer contours of the X-Type are classic Jaguar shapes with flowing lines, with oval hooded headlights, a specific radiator grille, and a rectangular elegant arched roof. Much resembled the image of the legendary XJ-series sedans. All external configurations are designed in terms of dynamism. There should be no elements constituting resistance to air flow. From the point of view of the exterior, some discrepancy between the geometric dimensions of the front and rear parts of the car attracts attention.

The extended engine compartment with full-size driver's doors flanks the shortened rear doors and a sleek trunk. According to the owners, in the Jaguar X-Type, landing in the back seat causes some difficulty. The windshield behaves in a strange way in winter, freezing when ice occurs. Obviously, the increased tilt of the glass played a cruel joke. Warm air from the deflectors does not solve the problem.

Claims for a luxurious interior, with wood-like, leather-wrapped interior, are lost alongside cheap plastics that are similar to those of Ford rental cars. The creak of poorly fitted trim parts in the early years of production spoiled the impression of a fairly comfortable ride on the highway. Moreover, there were no complaints about ride comfort and ease of control. According to the owners in the Jaguar X-Type of that time, on-board electronic systems often malfunctioned. From time to time the contact group of the automatic transmission selector failed. To bring the oxidized contacts to a working state, it was necessary to move the selector in positions before turning on the ignition.

The sales target in the first 2 years after entering the market failed and the company had to undergo a restyling in 2003. The new version of the Jaguar X-Type received front-wheel drive and a 2.0-liter Duratorq diesel engine with 130 hp. These changes have improved the sales situation in the highly competitive car segment. In 2004, the only serial station wagon of the company based on the Jaguar X-Type, called “Estate”, was launched on the market.

The developers paid much attention to security systems. The Jaguar X-Type received 4 stars in the EuroNCAP crash test. At the same time, all 4 X-Type models: S, SE, Sport Premium and Sovereign, have a very good package. According to many experts, Jaguar offered a fairly unique car in its class. The Jaguar X-Type is an affordable luxury vehicle.

After undergoing a few more changes in 2005 and 2008, due to the financial problems of Ford, the Jaguar X-Type “went off the run”. On July 15, 2009, unfortunately, it was announced that the Jaguar X-Type production program would be curtailed. In January of this year, there was a new announcement regarding plans to release the successor to the Jaguar X-Type. But it will be already in 2014.
